GALA day smiles lifted the gloom of an overcast Saturday in June - and might have helped keep the rain away from Maybole!

It had been a `gey dreich' morning as the Glebe Park was being set up in the morning. But the show had to go on, and Maybole Pipe Band led the parade from Carrick Academy, followed by the new King and Queen of Carrick, Scott Alexander and Michelle Brown in a horse-drawn landau. Also in the parade were Provost Liz Foulkes, Cathy Jamieson MSP Councillors Andy Hill and Alan Murray, and a collection of `odd' individuals! Groups taking part were: Maybole branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland, Maybole Town Twinning Association, Maybole Youth Action Group, Tiddlers and Tadpoles toddlers, Brownies, 1st Troon BB Pipe Band, Maybole Concert Party, line dancers, karate club members, Cairn Primary PA, and 1st Maybole Guides.

Councillor Murray declared gala festivities officially underway at Glebe Park, and the new King and Queen were crowned by Provost Foulkes and Cathy Jamieson. George Foulkes joined the dignitaries, who then judged the best float, best walking group and the fancy dress competition.

Traditional entertainment was provided by Maybole Pipe Band and three young dancers from the Aileen Robertson School of Highland Dancing, while rock group `The Haze' provided more modern sounds. Other entertainers included Grant Kidd, Stuart Thomson and a group of young dancers. A series of fun races and tug o' war contests was held, although it would be unfair to name winners with some of the dubious practices going on!

Winning all the way IT was fun just taking part, but even more fun for the gala day prize-winners.
