St. Oswald's, Maybole now has its own website with the latest news, history of the church and useful links

The beginnings of St Oswald’s Episcopal Church, Maybole in the wider context of the resurgence of the Scottish Episcopal Church (Part of a PhD thesis, ‘Irish Protestant Migrants in the Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway, University of Durham, 2007.  Copy in the diocesan office and with Bishop Gregor)

When Rev Dr Anne Tomlinson arrived at Maybole Station in the summer of 2011 she asked for directions to ‘St Oswald’s Church’.  No one could help her – no one knew where it was.  She then said, ‘The Episcopal Church’, but that also drew a blank. But then someone said, ‘Oh, do you mean the English Church?’, and immediately arms waved and fingers pointed her in the right direction.  We are referred to colloquially as “The English Church”, because we do attract many English people to our congregations, who down south belonged to the Church of England. We are of course a sister church to the Church of England, whose worship and ethos are very similar to our own, and together with them, and 160 other national churches, we belong to the worldwide Anglican Communion of some 80 million members.  the rest of the story....

St Oswald’s Episcopal Church 125th Anniversary Celebrations Rev. William Scott Wilson who was the Rector to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Ayr, founded our congregation in 1847.  ...  However it was not until 1883 that we had a building of our own, so this year we celebrate the 125th anniversary of its opening and consecration.  St Oswald’s was dedicated on 18th December 1883 by the bishop.  On Thursday 18th December at 11.00am we are holding a special Service of Thanksgiving.  On Sunday 21st December the Bishop of Glasgow & Galloway Diocese, Bishop Idris Jones will be the Celebrant and Preacher at our 11.30am Eucharist.   Again we extend a warm welcome to the whole community of Maybole. more

News from St Oswald’s October 2008
We celebrated Harvest with a special service in a beautifully decorated church on Sunday 5th October. “Bring and Share” was the description given for lunch, and everyone most certainly did. We enjoyed two courses with a great variety of dishes to choose from. More news

Doors Open Day at St Oswald’s. The doors to the Lord’s house are always open, but in this age of security they are not always unlocked. On Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th September 2008 St Oswald’s unlocked its doors to all. Cards intimating notice of the event were delivered to approximately 1000 houses in Maybole and people came. more

New Year, New Rector: New Year 2007 brought a new beginning for St Oswald’s. We are delighted to welcome our new Rector, Revd Ian Meredith, and his wife, Marilyn, to our worshipping community.

Revd Meredith was instituted as Rector of the South Ayrshire Team Episcopal Churches on Saturday 6th January.  The service took place at Holy Trinity, Ayr, and was attended by members from St Oswald’s and St John’s, Girvan, as well as many of the clergy from other churches in this area and representatives from South Ayrshire Council.

In his first letter to our Parish magazine Revd Meredith says, “I think the first thing should be a note of thanksgiving and appreciation for the warmth and generosity of your welcome to Marilyn and me since my appointment.”  He is looking forward to getting to know the three congregations and also the communities in which they are placed.

( Left: Rev. Dr. E Jauncey, minister 1952-1965. Contributed by his daughter Celia Dancer.).  It was in 1847 that the Revd. W S Wilson, Rector of Trinity Chapel, Ayr (now Holy Trinity Church, Ayr) founded a mission of the Scottish Episcopal Church in Maybole. Thirty-six years later the same Revd. W S Wilson (by now Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway) consecrated the then newly built church in Cargill Road, on 18th December 1883.

The church is seated for 90 people, there being on average around 100 names on the roll at any one time. The hall was built in 1973 and provides a congenial venue for the many ecumenical meetings in Maybole.

St Oswald's is now linked with Holy Trinity, Ayr and St John's, Girvan, and is served by a team ministry led by the Team Rector who is based at Holy Trinity, Ayr.
