Advanced Higher Geography Dolphin House Trip

From 28th to the 30th three advanced higher pupils, namely Elizabeth McJannet, Jennifer Andrew and Kristy Walker, visited the dolphin house at Culzean along with six pupils from Queen Margaret and six from Prestwick Academy. They carried out various field work studies over the sand dunes at Turnberry, the woods at Culzean, The Ferrly Burn and also completed a transect over the Brown Carrick Hills. During that time they were taught how to analyse the data using statistical techniques such as Chi-Squared which they will then use in their final project which they have to do as part of the advanced higher course. The day’s they spent there were very intense with them even working up to 11pm one evening trying to finalise at there data. Despite this the group had a great time and believe it has been of great benefit to them to be able to go on such a course. A big thank you must go to all the dolphin house staff for there enthusiasm and also to the school who were able to fund such a crucial trip.

Western Scotland University Visit

On Friday 7th some of the Carrick Pupils were interviewed by a representative from the new development at Paisley University- The Ayr Campus. They discussed with pupils what they would like the campus to offer when it is built for 2010 and what things they find important when deciding which university/collage to attend. The pupils were also informed about the decision to merge Paisley University with Ayr SAC to become the larger university with the fresh new name of The University of Western Scotland. The pupils as well as the researchers found the session worth while as for many pupils it made then think about the important things that they should take into consideration when deciding where to study.
