menzies.jpg (34269 bytes)Following is data regarding the family history of Rev. William Menzies, minister of Maybole Old Church from 1843 to 1870.

Rev William MENZIES, married Margaret PAGAN in East Greenock Parish on 9.10.1831. Here the couple had nine children. It seems that Rev William MENZIES was a minister of the East Parish in Greenock. His son John James Menzies was born and baptized in East Parish, Greenock (b 14.2.1843 c 12.3.1843) It was after this that the family moved to Maybole in Ayrshire.  The IGI online includes the record of his son - Peter Sinclair Menzies who married Mary Begg in Falkirk, Stirling on 4.7.1865, 2 daughters listed - Helen Amelia 8.6.1866 and Margaret Evelyn 20.10.1867, both born Govan, Lanark. Peter was minister of the Scots Church, Melbourne Australia in 1874 and died at age 34.

William Menzies, born at Dunkeld; assistant to the Rector of Grammar School there; educated at Univ. of St Andrews; M.A. (1822); licen. by Presb. of Dunkeld 29th June 1819; ord. to East Parish, Greenock, 20th April 1826; pres. by Queen Victoria; trans. and adm 7th Dec 1843; D.D. (Glasgow, 17th March 1851); died 15th April 1870. He marr. 10th Oct. 1831, Margaret Pagan, who died 17th Aug. 1871, and had issue- William Alfred, born 30th June, and died 20th July 1832; William Cunningham, banker, Halifax, Nova Scotia, born 14th June 1833, died at Hyeres, France, 10th April 1876; Jemima, born 24th June 1834, died 3rd June 1835; Jane Campbell, born 3rd March 1836; Robert Hair, born 20th May 1837, died 27th Sept. 1852; Elizabeth Pagan, born 12th Aug. 1838, died 29th April 1843; Peter Sinclair, min. of St George's-in-the-Fields, Glasgow, afterwards of Scots Church, Melbourne, born 1st Nov. 1839; Margaret Pagan, born 21st Feb. 1841; James John, born 14th Feb. 1843; Janet Helen, born 9th April 1846, died 6th Oct. 1858; Charles, born 16th April 1847; Mary Josephine, born 2nd Feb. 1849.-- [Smiths's Scottish Clergy, ii., 386]
